Going to Town Saturday April 29, 2006

When you live where I live going to town is almost a job.  I live in the middle of nowhere.  I love it here because it's so peaceful and we're on the water and I have wonderful neighbors but we're still in the middle of nowhere.  It's 20 miles to town.  20 miles to the nearest grocery store, drugstore, bank, etc.  So usually when I go to town I have to make 3 – 6 stops so I get everything done in 1 trip.  Today I went to town.  I didn't mess around – made my stops – did what I had to do and came home.  I was gone 4 1/2 hours!!!  If they would just build me a bridge across this lake it would make it a lot faster!  Of course if there were a bridge then a lot more people would live on this side of the lake and then we'd probably have stores over here too.  We do have one store.  I've named it "the 3-mile store" because it's 3 miles from my house.  It's a little country place with basic stuff, very small but when you need milk or bread you can get it there.  Oh – and beer!!  I think they sell more beer than anything.  Of course that doesn't do me any good since I don't drink beer!  If we take the boat we can be to town in about 8 minutes.  But when you get there you need a car.  I think we should park one over at the marina – then we could take the boat, go shopping, then bring it back by boat.  That wouldn't be so bad.

Yesterday – lots of phone calls from Traci.  She had told me a couple of weeks ago that she and Matt had broken up.  His parents didn't know because she's living in their house.  Well, they found out yesterday.  Now she has to find a new place to live.  They did say she could stay there until the semester is over (May 10th) if she can't find anywhere else.  She doesn't want to come to Georgia to live – besides which the closest place she could finish her Vet Technician program is 60 miles away from here.  She and a friend (April) had been talking about getting an apartment by the end of summer.  She tried (yesterday) to talk her dad into co-signing on a loan for her so she could get the apartment now but he refused.  Finally last night she called and said that April's parents will let her stay there until the two of them can get an apartment.  I hope it all works out okay.

Today we finished planting all the plants.  And finished the mulch.  Tomorrow it's suppose to rain!  Yeah!!  Maybe I'll get the day off.  I think we'll probably go to town (which is 20 miles away for those of you who don't know) tomorrow.  Charlie lost a screw out of his glasses so now only one lens will stay in the frame.  He has to get it fixed because he needs his glasses.

Can’t sleep Tuesday April 25, 2006

I wish I knew why I have trouble sleeping sometimes.  And, of course, it's usually when I know I need to sleep.  Like if we're leaving early for a trip or Charlie says "don't stay up too late, we have to get up early to work in the yard".  Does not sleeping good come with being older?  I don't know.  I do know when I was young I never had any problems sleeping, anytime, anywhere.

Yesterday we purchased 26 carpet roses! We’ve been looking for some carpet roses for a couple of months and finally found them at Home Depot. For those of you who don’t know – carpet roses are roses that grow out instead of up. We’ve had some when we lived in PA and in NJ and I wanted some here too. The good news is that up north all I ever found were pink ones. There are actually 6 colors of them and Home Depot had all 6 and now so do we. They are pink, yellow, coral, white, apple blossom and red. Anyway, today we got 20 of them planted and mulched (another 12 cubic yards of mulch delivered). Tomorrow we’ll finish planting and mulching them.

I'm tired!  Since we moved here permenently at the end of December we have:

1) replaced the carpet and linoleum in our kitchen, dining area, laundry room and living room with wood floors.

2) completely redid the hall bathroom (changed everything except the tub, including the floor)

3)put new casings around all the interior doors

4) installed a new back door – including the jam

5) replaced all the posts around our screened in porch (which is 16 x 28 ) with new 4 x 4 s, put a vinyl ceiling in the screened in porch, installed 2 ceiling fans out there and replaced all the screen.

6) painted/stained the screened in porch, the deck, the lower deck and all the railings

7) had 5 dump truck loads of dirt delivered – spread it, seeded it and put wheat straw over it all

8) installed 4 new inground sprinklers (added on to existing system)

9) ran 2 drainage lines underground from the house to the lake (over 100  feet)

10) tilled and put in a small vegetable garden

11) hauled and spread 18 cubic yards of mulch

and we spent a week in Florida repairing my 86 year old mother-in-law's place.  She had damage from Hurricane Wilma.

No wonder I'm tired!
